This is a beautiful antique gate leg table
made out of walnut. First introduced in England
in the 16th century. The table top has a fixed section
and one or two hinged legs which when not
in use hang vertically. As such, a gate leg
is a subset of the type known as a drop leaf.
The Hinged section , or flap is supported
on pivoted legs joined at the top and bottom
by stretchers constituting a gate.
Large flaps had two supports, which had
the advantage of providing freer leg space
in the center. Typically the table legs are
supported by stretchers. The earliest
gate leg tables of the 16th and 17th
century were
typically made of oak.

A Cherry Finish on a Maple Bedroom suite
This bedroom outfit had came in painted from the factory
Although removing a painted finish is a lot more work than
a wood finish this painted finish came out pretty clean.
After I was done removing the old painted finish I had
sanded the maple furniture with 180grit sandpaper and then
washed it down with some laquer thinner. Now that the old
finish is removed and I have sanded my maple bedroom
furniture it is time to start applying the new finish. With
this maple bedroom outfit I started by applying coats of
sealer and sanding with 220 grit sandpaper inbetwin coats
of finish. After sealing my bedroom furniture Now that this
bedroom furniture has been sealed and sealer sanded it is
time to start applying the color. Being that this is a maple
furniture going into a cherry finish I will start by applying a'
cherry dye stain that can be mixed with laquer or thinner
depending on how the finisher wants to use it. applying
this can be a little trickie as the color can bead up or
peal as you our applying it. So make sure you give the
dye stain enough time to dry before applying coat.
After I have acieved the color I was looking for with the
cherry dye stain I seal the bedroom furniture with a couple
more coats of sealer, let dry, and sealer sand once more
making sure that the finish is smooth for my next
application of finish. With this paticuler maple furniture set
I applied a little walnut color to darking up the cherry finish.
This maple bedroom outfit came out looking beautiful.
