This is a beautiful antique gate leg table
made out of walnut. First introduced in England
in the 16th century. The table top has a fixed section
and one or two hinged legs which when not
in use hang vertically. As such, a gate leg
is a subset of the type known as a drop leaf.
The Hinged section , or flap is supported
on pivoted legs joined at the top and bottom
by stretchers constituting a gate.
Large flaps had two supports, which had
the advantage of providing freer leg space
in the center. Typically the table legs are
supported by stretchers. The earliest
gate leg tables of the 16th and 17th
century were
typically made of oak.

The History of the widdicomb furniture co dates all the way back to 1864 Know at that time as the Widdicomb Brothers In 1869 the name had changed to Widdicomb Brothers & Richmond this name only stuck for a couple years. It was in 1873 when the name changed again to The widdicomb Furniture Co. Grand Rapids When I had picked this bedroom set up to restore, it had been stored in the customers garage for years. So I was surprised to see how good it had held up. Although it was a complete mess and broken up pretty good this bedroom set was made to last years built in the early 1900s from solid mahogany. I knew that I was going to really enjoy restoring this set.
